‘We all know Rocky Horror for its songs and mad quirky plot but it’s also the unique branding of the show that really resonates and makes all of us curious. 50 years on audiences are still inspired and imitating this original design. As a student of popular culture and art, this fascinates me … ‘
‘Australian Brian Thompson was the original production designer behind Rocky Horror (I worked with Brian on Priscilla London 2011) Along with Sue Blane, costume designer, both created a unique canvas inspired by gothic kitsch and old Hollywood B movies. Unique and groundbreaking in its tone (1973), this became a template for alternate popular cultures for generations to come. And it’s still relevant today!’
‘According to my internet search the The iconic lips logo featured in The Rocky Horror Picture Show was inspired by the painting "Observatory Time: The Lovers" by Man Ray, also known as "The Lips". This painting, created between 1932 and 1934, was the direct inspiration for the opening sequence of the film, conceived by production designer Brian Thomson. While Patricia Quinn's (original Magenta) lips were used for the visual, the song "Science Fiction/Double Feature" is sung by Richard O'Brien’.
‘So there you go … ‘
‘It’s through this logo and inspired 1930s paintings and indirectly Brian Thompsons design, that I’ve adapted my own unique style of writing (Rocky thoughts whilst on tour) around what is such an iconic Rocky rock n roll image. A celebration of my love and affection for a show that I’ve now been associated with for over 25 years and more’!
